Call of Duty 4 and Spore coming out for Mac

SporeIf you own a Mac and still sulk at the lack of your favorite titles, two big games might help cheer you up. Today, both Call of Duty 4 and the upcoming Spore have been announced as coming to a Mac near you.

According to News.com, EA will release Spore simultaneously on both the PC and Mac, and will utilize TransGaming Technologies to do so. TransGaming’s technology effectively creates a "wrapper" that goes around a piece of software developed for the PC, allowing it to run better on a Mac.

"The technology wrapper goes around (the software), and traps the (code) calls native to the Windows environment, and converts them to the correct calls for Mac," McCombe said. "It’s not a complete code rewrite. It’s more wrapper technology with some customer work."

I have no idea what that means, but here’s News.com’s explanation: "That means, for example, that when a piece of software, in this case, Spore, wants to do a graphics call to DirectX, TransGaming’s software translates the call so that it looks instead to the Mac graphics library."

As for Call of Duty 4, the only news is that it will be published by Aspyr Media and looks to be the exact same game we got on the PC and consoles; you can head to the official website for more details.
