SCi's financial report reveals some big sequels coming

justcauseSCi Entertainment released their latest fiscal year financial report today and located in the tiny text is the unfortunate news of a big loss for the publisher. During the fiscal year period that ended on June 30th, SCi reported a £30 million ($60.8 million) loss, mainly due to the price cuts of PlayStation 2 games and the continued high price of the PlayStation 3.

To combat the losses, SCi will start to invest more money into developing games for the Nintendo Wii and DS. They’re planning over 30 games for the two consoles that’ll be released by the end of 2008. SCi will still develop games for the PS3 but they’ll probably take longer to hit the market.

Tim Ryan, chairman for SCi, said, "The Board continues to believe in the long-term commercial success of PlayStation 3 but believes this may take more time than originally forecast by Sony. The Board is of the opinion that the key driver to the acceleration of the installed base of PlayStation 3 will be a further hardware price cut."

But here’s the good news: SCi revealed that Eidos Interactive is working on several big sequels for various games, including Just Cause 2, Battlestations: Midway 2, Hitman 5 and the next Tomb Raider game. I was a fan of Just Cause and I’ll certainly enjoy another Tomb Raider and Hitman game.

Despite some rumblings that SCi may be bought by another company, they only recognized in the financial results that they’re discussing a possible acquisition with unnamed companies, so if you expected news on that, looks like you’ll have to wait longer.
