New Civilization V: Gods & Kings expansion brings back religion, espionage

2K Games announced today that Civilization V will soon receive a “massive” expansion in the form of Civilization V: Gods and Kings. The expansion adds nine new civilizations, including Carthage, the Netherlands, and the Celts.

Gods and Kings also gives players more unit and resource options with 27 new units, 13 new buildings, and nine new Wonders. In addition, the expansion will bring religion and espionage to Civilization V for the first time. Players will be able to create their own customized religion, choose their own Pantheon of the Gods, and send out Great Prophets to convert others to their faith.

Once religion is established, the game will enter the Renaissance and unlock spy units. These spies can infiltrate other cities to steal technological advances, learn enemy movements, rig city-state elections, and even perform good ol’ fashioned coups.

The expansion will feature a reworked combat and AI system, redesigned naval units, three new scenarios, and new Leaders. You can expect the expansion to release for PC in late Spring 2012 — no word yet on a Mac release.
